How to dress for an interview

Believe it or not, one question I often get asked is “what should I wear to my interview?”

When it comes to choosing what to wear for a specific event, it’s all about the context and judging what will be appropriate in the environment. Despite the innovative steps law firms are taking in the here and now, the law continues to remain one of the most traditional professions.

Therefore, I would advise you to go with something that is traditional and timeless. To be on the safe side avoid the unusual, eye-popping and colourful. Stick with the plain and simple. A dark business suit with a plain coloured shirt/top coupled with appropriate footwear and simple accessories is a good start. Remember you want the focus to be on you and not your outfit.

I’m sure that everyone knows that one person who went to an interview dressed in red stilettos or a white boiler suit and got the job. However, this approach can be risky, especially if your interviewer does not share your fashion inclination. Dressing simply increases the probability that you will chime with your interviewer and leave a good impression.

I know that Sir Richard Branson has an obsessive hatred of the tie which is fine when you run your business from a private island; however you will most likely be interviewing in a meeting room tucked away in an office complex so just keep one handy.

Finally, if you’re in any doubt whatsoever, remember the age old adage ‘that it is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed’ and you won’t go wrong.
